This is jabber.belnet.be, the Jabber server of Belnet, the national research and education network of Belgium. It can be joined by anyone with a Jabber-enabled client. Some popular ones are Pidgin (available for Linux and Windows),Gaim, Psi or Exodus, The Jabber server is installed with transports towards popular networks like MSN, ICQ and Yahoo! so you can IM any of your contacts on these networks.

Every user on the Jabber.belnet.be server should accept the Acceptable Use Policy and the Privacy Policy .

Jabber

Jabber is best known as "the Linux of instant messaging" -- an open, secure, ad-free alternative to consumer IM services like AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo (see the IM quickstart). Under the hood, Jabber is a set of streaming XML protocols and technologies that enable any two entities on the Internet to exchange messages, presence, and other structured information in close to real time.

How to register

You can use your Jabber client to register a new account on our Jabber server. You should use jabber.belnet.be as the server to connect to.

The Belnet Jabber setup

The Belnet Jabber server support the following protocols:

Jabber
This is the basic jabber protocol. It is available at jabber.belnet.be, port 5222 (non-SSL) and port 5223 (SSL). Join the server by using your client to register a new JID.
Multi User Conference
The server support chatrooms using the MUC protocol. The conference server is listed as conference.jabber.belnet.be.
The Jabber User Directory
The users can store some information about themselves in the Jaber User Directory. It is addresses as jud.jabber.belnet.be, or through the browse function of your client.
AIM/ICQ
The AIM/ICQ transport will connect you to the America Online or the ICQ network and allows you to IM any of your buddies on that network.
MSN
The Microsoft Messenger plugin allows you to connect to the popular Messenger network and IM any of your contacts on the MSN network. It is capable of importing your buddylist.
Yahoo!
This transport will connect to the Yahoo! network, to allow you to tell your Yahoo!-friends about the Jabber-service...

Server details

The jabber-server resides on a bi-processor SunFire V65x with 1GB RAM. It links to the Belnet backbone through a 1Gb ethernet connections.
