Belnet Jabber Privacy Policy


This Privacy Policy applies to the public Jabber instant messaging server referred to as Jabber.belnet.be. Jabber.belnet.be is operated exclusively and independently by BELNET, Louizalaan 231, 1050 Brussels, Belgium, tel. 02/790.33.33, fax 02/790.33.34, e-mail: servicedesk@belnet.be.

Information Collection and Use

In order to use this service, a user must first complete the registration form. During registration a user is required to give his/her contact information, such as name and email address. This information is used by BELNET to contact the user about the service of this site. It is optional for the user to provide demographic information (such as postal code and gender), but encouraged so we can improve our service.

Registration

Completion of the registration form means that you accept the Privacy Policy of Jabber.belnet.be and its Acceptable Use Policy.

After registration as a user of Jabber.belnet.be, BELNET will provide you with a unique Jabber ID and your full name and emailadress through the JUD service. You may register multiple Jabber Ids for yourself, as long as they each conform to the requirements of this Acceptable Use Policy.

Log Files

BELNET uses IP addresses and Jabber IDs to administer the jabber.belnet.be service and server and to track user movements to prevent abuse. Any session can be recorded and stored.

Security

BELNET takes precautions to protect user information online and off-line.

All of the user information of Jabber.belnet.be is restricted to our offices and networks. Only employees who need the information to perform a specific job (for example, a system administrator or a customer service representative) are granted access to personally identifiable information. Servers containing personally identifiable information are kept in a physically secure environment.

Jabber gateways

Users of the Jabber service at jabber.belnet.be may choose to communicate with users of other instant messaging services, trough a 'bridge' service called a gateway. Usernames and passwords for these other instant messaging services may be stored and transmitted by Jabber gateways in clear text format. Also, since the transmission of messages is not always secure, jabber.belnet.be cannot guarantee privacy of this information once it passes trough the gateway to the other instant messaging service.

Complaints

If a user of Jabber.belnet.be believes that the privacy policy is not adhered to by BELNET, he or she can contact BELNET at the following address: servicedesk@belnet.be.

Notification of Changes

If BELNET decides to change this Privacy Policy, BELNET will post these changes on the BELNET homepage so the users of Jabber.belnet.be are always aware of what information BELNET collects and how BELNET uses the collected information. Users of jabber.belnet.be registered before the modification will be able to permit or to deny BELNET the right to use their information in this different manner. BELNET reserves the right to deny further use of jabber.belnet.be to users not willing to accept the policy modifications.Modifications to the Privacy Policy will come into force fifteen days after being posted on the homepage of BELNET.
